About the product
Our wild organic Fairtrade mountain almonds come from Gilgit-Baltistan in Pakistan. They grow without cultivation on wild almond trees, are harvested by hand by small farming families, freshly dried, calibrated, sorted and carefully cracked. They are neither roasted nor salted - this preserves their natural, slightly sweet flavour. Ideal for anyone who wants to savour almonds in their purest form.
The almonds come from old, small-seeded varieties. They impress with their crunchy consistency and slightly sweet flavour. Ideal for anyone who appreciates the pure, natural character of almonds.
Almonds are a valuable source of vegetable protein, fibre, healthy unsaturated fatty acids, vitamin E and minerals such as magnesium and phosphorus. They support normal cholesterol levels and protect cells from oxidative stress. As a nutrient-rich snack, they support a balanced diet.
Almonds are very versatile: As a pure snack, in muesli and bowls, for desserts or as an ingredient in oriental and Mediterranean cuisine. They are also ideal for baking and for delicious almond pesto.
The wild organic almonds come from Gilgit-Baltistan, a remote mountainous region in northern Pakistan. Over forty different varieties of small-pit almonds grow on wild trees there. They are harvested by around 1,400 smallholder families who have joined together to form the Mountain Fruits Association (MonAFFA). The almonds are harvested by hand in September, mechanically cracked and pre-sorted. In a second step, women do the fine sorting by hand. Processing takes place in the local factory of the Mountain Fruits Company, a long-standing partner of Pakka.
The Mountain Fruits Company (MFC) was founded in 2000 and is still the only Pakistani company that processes and exports organic and Fairtrade certified dried fruit, nuts and nut oils. The company emerged from a development project of the Aga Khan Foundation. It has retained its original mission: to improve and increase the income and scope of action of small farmers in the remote Gilgit-Baltistan region.
The almonds are processed locally in Pakistan - directly in the country of origin of the raw material. Pakka deliberately favours direct trade without middlemen. In addition to paying the Fairtrade premium, the harvests of the small farmers are pre-financed. This strengthens the entire local value chain and ensures fair incomes, high-quality products and sustainable local economic growth.
In addition to the Fairtrade premium, 5 centimes of every product sold goes to the Pakka Foundation to support projects in the countries of origin. More info: www.pakkafoundation.org
