About the product
Our organic Fairtrade cashews come from smallholder cooperatives in Burkina Faso. They are harvested by hand, then carefully cracked and skinned – under safe conditions for the workers. Only then are the raw kernels shipped to Hamburg, where they are gently roasted and refined with aromatic pepper – for an aromatic, spicy and slightly piquant snacking pleasure.
Crisp in texture, mildly creamy in aroma and finely balanced with aromatic, sweet Malabar pepper from southern India – a balanced taste experience with a slightly spicy note.
Cashew nuts are a valuable source of vegetable protein, healthy unsaturated fatty acids, vitamin E and minerals such as magnesium and phosphorus. As a nutritious snack, they support a balanced diet.
Ideal as a snack, for an aperitif or as a topping for bowls, salads and Asian-inspired dishes.
Origin: The cashew nuts come from the region around Bobo Dioulasso in Burkina Faso. They are grown by around 2,000 families from small farmers' cooperatives that produce organically and according to Fairtrade standards. In a country facing economic challenges and structural disadvantages, fair prices, purchase guarantees and training create important prospects for independent development.
Processing: After harvesting, the nuts are processed entirely on site in Burkina Faso. After steaming to neutralise the shell fluid, the nuts are cracked manually, dried, treated with thermal shock and skinned. Protective measures are taken to protect workers from the corrosive acid in the cashew shell. Only after this complex processing are the cashews vacuum-packed and shipped to Hamburg. There, they are gently roasted without oil and refined with pepper.
About gebana Burkina Faso: Gebana Burkina Faso was founded in 2006 and has been a strategic partner of Pakka since 2018. The company works with over 2,000 smallholder families for its cashew nuts and operates its own processing plant in Bobo Dioulasso - with the aim of creating local added value. The company's own production ensures consistent quality, serves as a training centre for local producers and increases the competitiveness of the entire region.
Since 2021, gebana Burkina Faso has been building a new, larger factory that will create 1000 new jobs. The opening is planned for 2025. Pakka has a 20% stake in the company.
Pakka favours fair, direct trade - without middlemen. Guaranteed minimum prices and the Fairtrade premium ensure stable incomes, promote sustainable cultivation methods and create prospects in structurally weak regions.
In addition to the Fairtrade premium, 5 centimes of every product sold goes to the Pakka Foundation to support projects in the countries of origin. More info: www.pakkafoundation.org
