About the product

Our wild organic Fairtrade walnuts come from the Samarkand region in Uzbekistan. They grow without cultivation on wild walnut trees and are harvested by hand by small farming families in the wild collection areas and dried, sorted and carefully cracked by our partner Silk Road Organik Foods.

Our wild walnuts come from old, wild varieties. They are smaller and more compact than cultivated varieties and are characterized by a more intense aroma - slightly tart, with a fine, pleasantly bitter note. Their crunchy texture and nutty, spicy taste make them a real rarity from wild harvesting.

Walnuts are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, vegetable protein, fiber and vitamin E. They also contain minerals such as magnesium and potassium. This combination supports cardiovascular health, contributes to normal cholesterol levels and protects cells from oxidative stress. As a nutrient-rich snack, they are a valuable part of a balanced diet.

Wild walnuts are ideal as a snack on their own or as an ingredient in muesli, bowls and salads. They go perfectly with cheese platters, oriental dishes or as a special ingredient in baking. Their intense flavor also gives pestos, spreads and sauces a hearty, slightly tart note.

The walnut originally comes from Persia. The walnut came to Central Asia via the early trade routes. Our wild walnuts are descended from these old, wild varieties that still grow in the natural wild collection areas of Urgut and around the Charvak reservoir in Uzbekistan. Harvesting is laborious manual work: collectors climb centuries-old trees with ladders or carefully knock down the fruit with long sticks. The walnuts are then transported to central collection points on donkeys, horses or e-mopeds.

Wild harvesting is controlled by the state; a fee is paid per kilogram, which also ensures the protection of the areas. Due to the original growing conditions, the nuts are smaller than cultivated varieties, but are particularly aromatic and rich in valuable nutrients. For the local people, these wild products have a cultural significance and are traditionally regarded as "natural medicine".

The walnuts are processed by Silk Road Organik Foods, the first Fairtrade-certified processor in Central Asia. From drying and sorting to cracking and packaging, everything takes place in Uzbekistan - in close cooperation with two small farmers' cooperatives that support around 1,000 families along the Silk Road. This results in high-quality products, fair working conditions and new prospects in structurally weak regions.

The walnuts are produced from A to Z in Uzbekistan - directly in the country of origin of the raw material. Pakka deliberately relies on direct trade without middlemen. In addition to paying the Fairtrade premium, the harvests of small farmers are pre-financed. This strengthens the entire local value chain and ensures fair incomes, high-quality products and sustainable local economic growth.

In addition to the Fairtrade premium, 5 pence from every product sold goes to the Pakka Foundation to support projects in the countries of origin. More information: www.pakkafoundation.org
