About the product
The black organic mulberries of the Shotut variety come from the Samarkand region in Uzbekistan. There, they are harvested when fully ripe in summer by smallholder families and then gently processed by Silk Road Organik Foods using an environmentally friendly solar drying method. This ensures that the aroma and valuable nutrients are largely preserved. The entire processing takes place directly in the country of origin, without any detours via middlemen.
Black mulberries surprise with an intense, fruity aroma reminiscent of ripe blackberries, dark raisins and wild berries. Unlike the more familiar white mulberries, which are characterised by a mild, honey-sweet note with an almost caramel-like character, black mulberries offer a deeper variety of flavours with a delicate, invigorating acidity. Their soft, slightly chewy consistency makes them a special treat – full-bodied, aromatic and unmistakable.
Mulberries are considered a nutrient-rich dried fruit. They naturally contain fibre, which aids digestion, as well as plant protein and iron. They are also a source of vitamin C and vitamin K, as well as secondary plant substances with antioxidant effects. These help to protect cells from oxidative stress and strengthen the immune system. Thanks to their natural sugar content, they provide quickly available energy – ideal as a healthy snack between meals.
Dried mulberries are very versatile: they can be eaten straight from the packet as a snack, added to muesli, bowls and yoghurts for a fruity touch, or used as an ingredient in baked goods. In Middle Eastern dishes, they are traditionally combined with nuts or used in rice and couscous dishes. They also add natural sweetness and a delicate crunch to homemade energy bars and desserts.
Note: Our mulberries are a purely natural product and can stick together strongly.
The botanical origin of mulberries is believed to be in the Near and Central East. Our Uzbek fruits come from old varieties native to the Samarkand region, which have been cultivated along the Silk Road for centuries. The small farmers are organised in a cooperative that supports around 300 families. After the summer harvest, the mulberries are dried using solar energy and sorted by hand at our partner Silk Road Organik Foods near Samarkand. Up to 80 employees – mostly women – are involved in the process, creating valuable jobs in a structurally weak region.
Our organic mulberries are produced from A to Z in Uzbekistan - directly in the country of origin of the raw materials. Pakka deliberately favours direct trade without middlemen. In addition to paying the Fairtrade premium, the harvests of the small farmers are pre-financed. This strengthens the entire local value chain and ensures fair incomes, high-quality products and sustainable local economic growth.
In addition to the Fairtrade premium, 5 centimes of every product sold goes to the Pakka Foundation to support projects in the countries of origin. More info: www.pakkafoundation.org
