About the product
Our organic Fairtrade cashews come from small farmers' cooperatives in Kerala in the south of India. The nuts grow in species-rich forest gardens, also known as agroforestry, far away from monocultures. They are harvested by hand, then carefully cracked and the skin removed - under safe conditions for the workers. After being exported to Switzerland, they are gently roasted and flavoured with aromatic Malabar pepper at the Deliciel factory in Birmensdorf.
Cashew nuts have a crunchy texture and a mild, creamy flavour. The Malabar pepper comes from the same growing regions as the cashews and provides a balanced, slightly spicy flavour. The roasting creates a wonderful combination of nutty flavour and peppery spiciness.
Cashew nuts are a valuable source of vegetable protein, healthy unsaturated fatty acids, vitamin E and minerals such as magnesium and phosphorus. As a nutritious snack, they support a balanced diet.
Ideal as a snack, for an aperitif or as a topping for bowls, salads and Asian-inspired dishes.
Origin: The organic cashew nuts grow on the Malabar Coast in the southern Indian state of Kerala. They are cultivated by the members of the small farmers' cooperative "Fairtrade Alliance Kerala" in species-rich forest gardens, also known as agroforestry. The rainy coastal location and the tropical climate with low temperature fluctuations favour the high-yielding and diverse cultivation of natural products. This extensive form of agriculture protects the soil, promotes water quality and supports biodiversity, the foundation of our food supply.
Processing: After harvesting, the nuts are fully processed on site: They are dried, cracked by hand and the skin is removed. Protective measures are used to protect the workers from the corrosive acid in the shell of the cashew nuts. Only after this careful processing does the raw kernel arrive in Switzerland, where it is gently roasted at the Deliciel factory in Birmensdorf and refined with aromatic Malabar pepper.
About FTAK: The Fair Trade Alliance Kerala (FTAK) is a co-operative of over 4,500 smallholder families in southern India. Founded together with Pakka in 2006, it produces a wide range of natural products according to organic and Fairtrade standards. The cooperative supports its members with expertise, infrastructure and a clear vision - to secure food, empower women and protect diversity. The Fairtrade premium is invested in local projects, such as solar-powered fences to protect against elephants, composting facilities or disaster funds. This creates fair and solidarity-based agriculture along the entire value chain.
Pakka favours fair, direct trade - without middlemen. Guaranteed minimum prices and the Fairtrade premium ensure stable incomes, promote sustainable cultivation methods and create prospects in structurally weak regions.
In addition to the Fairtrade premium, 5 centimes of every product sold goes to the Pakka Foundation to support projects in the countries of origin. More info: www.pakkafoundation.org
