About the product
These organic golden berries (also called physalis) are sourced from small farming families in the Colombian Andes. They are grown organically in Nariño in south-western Colombia, harvested by hand when fully ripe, and dried gently on site. The fruits are 100% natural, unsweetened and unsulphured, and are processed without additives. Processing them in Colombia means that a significant portion of the added value remains in the country of origin.
Dried organic golden berries offer a blend of fruity sweetness and a refreshingly tart flavour. Their taste is reminiscent of a blend of mango, apricot and lemon: intense yet harmoniously balanced. Gentle drying preserves the ripe berries' full aroma, giving them a naturally caramelised sweetness. Their chewy, juicy-soft texture enhances the characteristic, pleasantly invigorating flavour of these golden-orange Andean berries.
Golden berries are an excellent source of vitamins and protein. In fact, their protein content exceeds that of goji berries, making them a real protein powerhouse! The orange berry itself is considered particularly valuable. It provides important nutrients and contains disease-fighting antioxidants. The fibre in the pulp promotes healthy digestion and helps to maintain stable blood sugar levels. When consumed in moderation, golden berries are a valuable addition to a balanced diet.
Dried golden berries make an ideal snack on their own or in muesli bowls, and can be used to make homemade energy bars, for example in combination with nuts and dark chocolate.
Golden berries belong to the nightshade family and originate from the highlands of Peru and Chile. Pakka's organic golden berries are cultivated by small-scale farmers in Nariño, a region in south-western Colombia. The cooperative consists of 14 members and supports 95 families, who collectively cultivate 24.5 hectares of land organically. Physalis grow on large shrubs and are protected by a decorative, lantern-like shell. Harvesting takes place throughout the year and is labour-intensive due to the hand-picking process. The harvested fruits are washed at our partner company, Fruandes, in Ibagué, and then dried gently without any additives. They are then sorted and packaged on site. Processing immediately after harvesting preserves the aroma, texture and nutrients.
About Fruandes: Pakka is a long-standing partner of Fruandes – Frutos de los Andes – a socially committed Colombian producer of organic dried fruit based in Ibagué, west of Bogotá. The company's goal is to produce high-quality, healthy organic products locally and to share the added value fairly between producers, processors and consumers. In recent years, with Pakka's help, Fruandes has been able to build a new processing plant, modernise its packaging line and expand its warehouse. This has enabled the company to grow and create valuable jobs in a rural region.
These dried golden berries are produced entirely in Colombia – directly in the country of origin of the raw materials. Pakka deliberately focuses on direct trade and does not use intermediaries. This strengthens the entire value chain locally. Not only does this ensure the best product quality, it also creates fair jobs in structurally weak regions of Colombia and contributes to sustainable economic development.
