About the product

The organic dragon fruits come from small farming families in the Colombian Andes. They are organically grown in Huila in south-western Colombia, harvested by hand when fully ripe and gently dried on site. The fruits are 100% natural, unsweetened, unsulphured and processed without additives. As production takes place entirely in Colombia, the entire value chain remains in the country of origin – from cultivation and processing to packaging.

Dried organic dragon fruit, also known as pitaya or pitahaya, has a mild, pleasantly sweet and sour taste and an exotic freshness. Its texture is delicate and slightly crunchy at the same time – gentle drying creates a fruity aroma reminiscent of a mixture of kiwi and pear. The yellow variety is considered particularly aromatic and sweeter than the pink variety – a tropical snack with a fine balance between sweetness and acidity.

Dragon fruit is rich in fibre, which supports healthy digestion, and contains valuable vitamins such as vitamin C and B vitamins. It also provides minerals such as iron, magnesium and calcium, as well as secondary plant substances with antioxidant effects that help protect cells from oxidative stress. The small black seeds in the flesh are particularly beneficial for digestion and provide unsaturated fatty acids. As a light, nutrient-rich snack, dried dragon fruit is a good addition to a balanced, plant-based diet.

Please note: As the seeds contained in the flesh stimulate digestion, dragon fruit can have a laxative effect if consumed in excess.

Dried dragon fruit is ideal as a snack on the go or as a fruity addition to muesli and bowls.

Dragon fruit is a naturally wild tropical plant. It grows on a type of cactus that requires intensive cultivation. The plants must be tied to wooden structures so that they do not lie on the ground and are thus protected from moisture and pests. The fruit grows from a beautiful flower that blooms at night and is harvested twice a year, once on a larger scale and once on a smaller scale.

Pakka's organic dragon fruit is grown by small farmers in Huila in south-western Colombia. The cooperative consists of six members and supports 72 families who collectively farm 12.8 hectares organically.

The harvested fruits are washed, peeled, cut and gently dried without any additives at our partner Fruandes in Ibagué. They are then sorted and packaged directly on site. Processing immediately after harvesting preserves the aroma, texture and nutrients.

About Fruandes: Pakka is a long-standing partner of Fruandes – Frutos de los Andes – a socially committed Colombian producer of organic dried fruit based in Ibagué, west of Bogotá. The company's goal is to produce high-quality, healthy organic products locally and to share the added value fairly between producers, processors and consumers. In recent years, with Pakka's help, Fruandes has been able to build a new processing plant, modernise its packaging line and expand its warehouse. This has enabled the company to grow and create valuable jobs in a rural region.

The dried dragon fruit is produced entirely in Colombia – directly in the country of origin of the raw materials. Pakka deliberately focuses on direct trade and does not use intermediaries. Close cooperation with partners Fruandes and Equiori, as well as smallholder cooperatives, strengthens the entire value chain locally. This not only ensures the best product quality, but also creates fair jobs in structurally weak regions of Colombia and contributes to sustainable economic development.

In addition to the Fairtrade premium, 5 centimes of every product sold goes to the Pakka Foundation to support projects in the countries of origin. More info: www.pakkafoundation.org
