About the product

Our organic Fairtrade pomegranate seeds come from old, local varieties grown in the village of Varganza in southern Uzbekistan. They are harvested by hand in autumn, carefully removed from their shells and dried in the sun together with the pulp. The result is natural, unsweetened and 100% organic pomegranate seeds with a special crunchiness. Gentle processing preserves both the characteristic aroma and the valuable nutrients.

The dried pulp combines fruity sweetness with refreshing acidity, while the seeds provide a delicate crunch. The taste is reminiscent of an exciting mixture of sweet raisins and tart cranberries. The drying process further intensifies the flavours, allowing them to unfold particularly strongly.

Pomegranate seeds are considered particularly rich in antioxidants, which help protect cells from oxidative stress. They contain valuable phytochemicals such as polyphenols and anthocyanins, which can have anti-inflammatory effects. They also provide fibre, which aids digestion, as well as vitamin C and potassium, which contribute to the normal functioning of the immune system, nerves and muscles. When consumed in moderation, pomegranate seeds are a nutrient-rich part of a balanced diet.

Pomegranate seeds are very versatile: they can be enjoyed as a crunchy snack between meals, in muesli or granola, in bowls and salads. They also add a fruity, tart flavour to oriental rice and couscous dishes. When baking, they enhance breads, bars and pastries and can also be used as a topping for desserts or yoghurt.

Tip: Soak the dried pomegranate seeds in lukewarm water – after a short time, they will rehydrate and become juicy and intensely fruity!

The pomegranates come from the village of Varganza in the Kitab district in southern Uzbekistan. Located on the edge of the Pamir Mountains, the region offers ideal conditions for traditional pomegranate cultivation with hot summers and cold winters. Many of the trees are up to 200 years old.

To protect the fruit from the strong Uzbek sun, they are individually wrapped in paper during the ripening period, a laborious process carried out by hand. The harvest is carried out by members of the Dustkul Bogi cooperative, which has been certified organic and Fairtrade since 2012. Ripe pomegranates can weigh up to 2 kilograms and are a real regional speciality.

After harvesting, our partner Silk Road Organik Foods takes over the entire processing in Uzbekistan – from removing the husks to drying the kernels in the sun. Energy-efficient methods are used, including solar thermal and photovoltaic systems, which enable largely climate-friendly processing. Up to 80 employees – mostly women – sort the fruits by hand and check them for impurities.

Our organic Fairtrade pomegranate seeds are produced from A to Z in Uzbekistan - directly in the country of origin of the raw materials. Pakka deliberately favours direct trade without middlemen. In addition to paying the Fairtrade premium, the harvests of the small farmers are pre-financed. This strengthens the entire local value chain and ensures fair incomes, high-quality products and sustainable local economic growth.

In addition to the Fairtrade premium, 5 centimes of every product sold goes to the Pakka Foundation to support projects in the countries of origin. More info: www.pakkafoundation.org
