About the product

The wild organic Fairtrade sour cherries are harvested when fully ripe in summer by small Uzbek farmers in the mountainous wild collection areas of Samarkand and are freshly processed, pitted and gently sun-dried by Silk Road Organik Foods. This is an old variety that is native only to Uzbekistan. 100% natural, unsweetened, uncoated and unsulphured. Deliciously tart and fruity flavour and very aromatic.

Wild organic Fairtrade sour cherries combine refreshing acidity with a natural fruitiness reminiscent of ripe forest fruits. Thanks to the wild, original variety, they have a distinctive aroma with subtle hints of almonds and vanilla. Sun drying concentrates the flavour without altering it – intense, aromatic and unmistakable.

Dried sour cherries are rich in fibre, which supports healthy digestion, and provide vitamin C, which contributes to the normal functioning of the immune system. They also contain phytochemicals such as anthocyanins, which are believed to have antioxidant properties. These can help protect cells from oxidative stress. Sour cherries are known for their melatonin content, which plays a role in regulating the sleep-wake cycle, and potassium, which supports normal nerve and muscle function. As a natural source of energy, they are an excellent part of a balanced diet.

Ideal as a snack on the go or as a fruity addition to muesli, bowls and desserts. Also perfect for baking, homemade bars or in oriental dishes.
Note: Despite careful inspection, individual seeds and seed fragments may be present. Please exercise caution when consuming.

The botanical origin of sour cherries is believed to be in Asia Minor and the North Caucasus. Our Uzbek wild sour cherries are descended from these original varieties. The wild harvesting areas are located in the mountainous regions around Samarkand. They are not artificially irrigated – the cherry trees thrive exclusively on naturally available rainwater and groundwater. This conserves the scarce water resources in Uzbekistan, where water is a rare commodity, and makes this product particularly environmentally friendly and sustainable.

Harvesting is carried out by hand in summer, which is a laborious process: collectors climb the trees with ladders or carefully loosen the fruit with sticks. They are then transported to central collection points by donkey, horse or electric moped. The collectors are affiliated with a Fairtrade smallholder cooperative that supports around 300 families along the ancient Silk Road.

Wild harvesting is controlled by the state; a fee is paid per kilogram, which also ensures the protection of the areas. Due to the original growing conditions, the fruits are smaller than cultivated varieties, but particularly aromatic and nutritious.

After harvesting, drying takes place in the sun. Silk Road Organik Foods carries out all the processing near the city of Samarkand. The processing process combines manual care with modern technology. Up to 80 employees - mainly women - sort the fruit by hand, check it for impurities and remove small stones.

Our organic Fairtrade sour cherries are produced from A to Z in Uzbekistan - directly in the country of origin of the raw materials. Pakka deliberately favours direct trade without middlemen. In addition to paying the Fairtrade premium, the harvests of the small farmers are pre-financed. This strengthens the entire local value chain and ensures fair incomes, high-quality products and sustainable local economic growth.

In addition to the Fairtrade premium, 5 centimes of every product sold goes to the Pakka Foundation to support projects in the countries of origin. More info: www.pakkafoundation.org
