About the product
Our organic Fairtrade peanuts come from small farmers in the Urgut region in southern Uzbekistan. The nuts are harvested in autumn, then carefully shelled and processed. As this is an old local variety, the shell is slightly thicker than that of conventionally grown peanuts. Each shell contains 3-4 large to small, intensely aromatic peanut kernels. The peanuts are gently roasted in Hamburg and refined with a pinch of salt. The result is an aromatic, crunchy snack – simple, honest and natural.
Roasting enhances the characteristic nutty, buttery aroma of peanuts. The salt creates a balanced taste experience – spicy, aromatic and pleasantly savoury, without masking the natural character of the nut.
Peanuts, which belong to the legume family, are rich in vegetable protein and provide valuable fibre that supports healthy digestion. They contain healthy unsaturated fatty acids and important micronutrients such as magnesium, potassium, phosphorus and vitamin E. This combination contributes to normal nerve and muscle function, supports energy metabolism and has an antioxidant effect by protecting cells from oxidative stress. When consumed in moderation, they are a nutrient-rich part of a balanced diet.
The roasted, salted peanuts are very versatile:
- As an ingredient for homemade peanut butter
- For baking and cooking (e.g. in bread, biscuits, sauces or Asian-inspired dishes)
- As a topping for muesli, bowls or salads
The peanuts grow in the fields of the Urgut region in southern Uzbekistan. From May to September, the plants ripen in a dry, continental climate with hot summers and cold winters. They are irrigated only a few times per season with meltwater and rainwater from the mountains – a scarce resource that is used very efficiently. Due to the slow growth in this arid environment, the nuts remain smaller than commercially available varieties, but develop a concentrated aroma and high oil content. Harvesting takes place in October.
They are then processed by Silk Road Organik Foods in accordance with organic and Fairtrade standards: shelled, processed, sorted and packaged. Energy-efficient processes are used, including solar thermal and photovoltaic systems, which enable largely climate-friendly processing. Up to 80 employees – mostly women – sort the peanuts by hand and check them for impurities and quality. The vacuum-packed peanuts are then transported to Hamburg, where they are gently roasted and lightly salted by a specialised roasting partner.
