About the product
Our roasted, organic, Fairtrade almonds are sourced from smallholder farming families in Pakistan. They are carefully harvested, shelled and sorted before being gently roasted and caramelised with organic sugar in Switzerland. Their crispy caramel coating and delicate aroma are reminiscent of Christmas markets and cosy Advent days. They are free from artificial additives.
Our roasted almonds are a hit thanks to their crunchy texture and well-balanced, nutty-sweet flavour. The gentle roasting process brings out the natural almond aroma, whilst the delicate caramel coating adds a pleasant sweetness and a crunchy bite. The combination of roasted flavours and caramelised sweetness makes them a much-loved nutty classic.
Almonds are naturally rich in plant-based protein and contain unsaturated fatty acids, as well as fibre, vitamin E and minerals such as magnesium and phosphorus. As a result of the caramelisation process, roasted almonds also contain sugar and are therefore particularly suitable as a sweet treat to be enjoyed in moderation.
Whether as a sweet snack between meals, with a cup of coffee or tea, or as a little treat during Advent – roasted almonds are a Christmas classic. They also make a crunchy topping for desserts, ice cream or muesli, and are a popular gift to bring along or a little Christmas present.
The almonds are processed locally in Pakistan - directly in the country of origin of the raw material. Pakka deliberately favours direct trade without middlemen. In addition to paying the Fairtrade premium, the harvests of the small farmers are pre-financed. This strengthens the entire local value chain and ensures fair incomes, high-quality products and sustainable local economic growth.
The organic almonds come from Gilgit-Baltistan, a remote mountainous region in northern Pakistan. There are over forty different varieties of small-pit almond tree. They are harvested by around 1,400 smallholder families who have joined together to form the Mountain Fruits Association (MonAFFA). The almonds are harvested by hand in September, mechanically cracked and pre-sorted. In a second step, women do the fine sorting by hand. Processing takes place in the local factory of the Mountain Fruits Company, a long-standing partner of Pakka.
The Mountain Fruits Company (MFC) was founded in 2000 and is still the only Pakistani company that processes and exports organic and Fairtrade certified dried fruit, nuts and nut oils. The company emerged from a development project of the Aga Khan Foundation. It has retained its original mission: to improve and increase the income and scope of action of small farmers in the remote Gilgit-Baltistan region.
Processing: After being exported to Switzerland, the almonds are gently roasted and caramelised by our partner, Deliciel, in Birmensdorf. Organic sugar is used in this process.
In addition to the Fairtrade premium, 5 centimes of every product sold goes to the Pakka Foundation to support projects in the countries of origin. More info: www.pakkafoundation.org
