About the product
Our organic Fairtrade tomatoes come from the sun-drenched Samarkand region of Uzbekistan. There, smallholder farming families grow them according to organic standards, carefully harvest them by hand, cut them in half and gently air-dry them in the sun. These traditional local tomato varieties have a distinctive flavour. The tomato halves are 100% natural, unsalted, without added oil or sugar and free from additives. Gentle drying preserves their characteristic tomato flavour.
Our sun-dried tomatoes have an intense, fruity, slightly sweet flavour with a pleasantly tangy note. Drying concentrates the natural taste of fully ripe tomatoes. Their texture is firm and slightly chewy. When soaked in water overnight, the tomato halves become soft and juicy again, allowing their full flavour to develop. As they are neither salted nor packed in oil, their original taste remains unchanged.
Dried tomatoes provide dietary fibre and plant-based protein. They also contain plant compounds with antioxidant properties and vitamin C. Drying concentrates many of their nutrients. Our natural tomato halves have no added salt, oil or sugar and are a flavourful addition to a balanced, plant-based diet.
Dried tomatoes are versatile in the kitchen. They are ideal for pasta dishes, risotto, salads, sauces and Mediterranean vegetable dishes. Finely chopped, they add an intense tomato flavour to pesto, spreads, dips or homemade bread.
For a softer texture, soak the tomato halves in water for a few hours or overnight. They can then be used in the same way as fresh tomatoes or preserved in olive oil with herbs. They also add flavour to hot dishes without soaking.
Our organic Fairtrade tomatoes come from the Samarkand region in the heart of Uzbekistan. The continental climate, with its hot, sunny summers, provides favourable conditions for growing flavourful tomatoes.
The growers belong to a Fairtrade-certified smallholder cooperative that supports around 300 families along the ancient Silk Road.
After harvesting, the tomatoes are washed, cut and dried in the sun. All processing is carried out by our partner Silk Road Organik Foods near the city of Samarkand. The process combines careful manual work with modern technology. Up to 80 employees – most of them women – sort the tomatoes by hand and check them for impurities.
The tomatoes are processed locally in Uzbekistan - directly in the country of origin of the raw material. Pakka deliberately favours direct trade without middlemen. In addition to paying the Fairtrade premium, the harvests of the small farmers are pre-financed. This strengthens the entire local value chain and ensures fair incomes, high-quality products and sustainable local economic growth.
In addition to the Fairtrade premium, 5 centimes of every product sold goes to the Pakka Foundation to support projects in the countries of origin. More info: www.pakkafoundation.org
