About the product
Our organic sea buckthorn berries are wild-harvested in Uzbekistan, in the sun-drenched region around Samarkand. They are harvested by hand by small-scale farmers and then gently air-dried. The berries are 100% natural: unsweetened, uncoated and free from additives.
Important: Sea buckthorn berries have a very hard stone – please do eat them with caution.
Dried sea buckthorn berries have a distinctly tart, fruity flavour – often with a hint of citrus and tart berries. The drying process concentrates the flavour, whilst the berries remain fairly firm. If you prefer a milder taste, you can soak them briefly or combine them with sweet ingredients (e.g. banana, apple, dates).
Sea buckthorn is traditionally regarded as a nutrient-rich berry. Depending on the harvest and processing method, it provides vitamin C as well as phytochemicals (e.g. carotenoids and polyphenols). Sea buckthorn berries also naturally contain various fatty acids, although the fat content in whole berries varies depending on the variety and the proportion of pulp.
As part of a balanced diet, dried sea buckthorn berries make an interesting addition – especially if you want to add a touch of fruity tartness to your daily routine.
- Muesli & Granola: For a fresh, tangy flavour – best mixed with sweeter fruits.
- Smoothies: blend in 1–2 teaspoons; ideal when combined with banana, mango or apple.
- Baking: In muffins, bars, bread or energy balls (soak briefly beforehand if necessary).
- Soaking: Place them briefly in lukewarm water to make them milder and slightly softer.
Important: As the stone is very hard, please chew carefully – only suitable for children if the berries are ground or processed, for example.
Sea buckthorn grows in Uzbekistan in wild harvesting areas around Samarkand. It is harvested by hand by smallholder families. Wild harvesting is regulated by the state; a fee is paid per kilogramme, which also helps to protect the areas.
Further processing takes place entirely in Uzbekistan: after harvesting, the berries are gently air-dried, sorted and packaged. Processing is carried out by Pakka’s partner, Silk Road Organik Foods, which works closely with smallholder cooperatives along the ancient Silk Road, thereby boosting local economic activity and creating jobs in structurally disadvantaged regions.
The organic sea buckthorn berries are produced entirely in Uzbekistan – right in the country of origin of the raw material. Pakka deliberately focuses on direct trade without middlemen. In this way, we strengthen the entire local value chain and ensure fair incomes, high-quality products and sustainable economic growth in the region.
For every product sold, 5 centimes goes to the Pakka Foundation to support projects in the countries of origin. More info: www.pakkafoundation.org
