About the product

The wild organic Fairtrade apricots are harvested fully ripe in the mountainous wild collection areas by small Uzbek farmers and are freshly processed, pitted and gently dried by Silk Road Organik Foods. It is an old variety that is only native to Uzbekistan. 100% natural, unsweetened, unoiled and unsulphurised. Wonderfully sweet and fruity flavour and very aromatic.

The wild, dried apricots are characterised by an intense sweetness and a very fruity aroma. They are smaller than standard apricots, but all the more flavourful. As they are unsulphured and completely natural, they are somewhat tougher in consistency and vary in colour - from dark orange to brownish. Tip: Place apricots in lukewarm water - they rehydrate quickly and become soft, juicy and intensely fruity!

Dried apricots are rich in fibre, which supports healthy digestion, and contain important minerals such as potassium and magnesium, which contribute to the normal functioning of muscles and nerves. They provide beta-carotene (precursor of vitamin A), which is good for the skin and eyesight, as well as phytochemicals with antioxidant properties. As a natural source of energy, they are a valuable addition to a balanced diet.

Wild apricots are ideal as a snack when travelling, as a fruity component in muesli or in bowls. They are a natural sweetener for baking, for homemade bars or as an ingredient in oriental dishes such as couscous or tajine. Soaked in water, they can be rehydrated and are then juicy and intensely fruity.

The botanical origin of the apricot is thought to be in Central Asia in the mountainous regions around the Tienshan Mountains. Our Uzbek wild apricots are also descended from these original varieties. The wild collection areas in the mountainous regions around Samarkand and Tashkent are not artificially irrigated - the apricot trees thrive exclusively with the naturally available rainwater and groundwater. This conserves the scarce water resources in Uzbekistan, where water is a rare commodity, and makes this product particularly environmentally friendly and sustainable.

Harvesting is done by hand in the summer: collectors climb the trees with ladders or carefully remove the fruit with long sticks. They are transported to central collection points on donkeys, horses or e-mopeds.

Wild harvesting is controlled by the state; a fee is paid per kilogramme, which also ensures the protection of the areas. Due to the original growing conditions, the fruits are smaller than cultivated varieties, but are particularly flavoursome and rich in nutrients.

Further processing - from drying and sorting to packaging - is carried out by Silk Road Organik Foods in Uzbekistan. The company works closely with two small farmers' cooperatives that support around 1,000 families along the old Silk Road and create fair jobs in structurally weak regions.

The apricots are produced from A to Z in Uzbekistan - directly in the country of origin of the raw material. Pakka deliberately favours direct trade without middlemen. In addition to paying the Fairtrade premium, the harvests of the small farmers are pre-financed. This strengthens the entire local value chain and ensures fair incomes, high-quality products and sustainable local economic growth.

In addition to the Fairtrade premium, 5 centimes of every product sold goes to the Pakka Foundation to support projects in the countries of origin. More info: www.pakkafoundation.org
